Margie Nienaber | Here Above Beyond | Art Exhibition

24/10/2020 @ 10:00 - 07/11/2020 @ 13:00

Margie Nienaber | Here Above Beyond | Art Exhibition in Windhoek, Namibia | 24th of October until the 7th of November 2020

Here, Above, Beyond

“Deep sky is, of all impressions, the nearest akin to a feeling”, – Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Artist at work – Margaret Joy (Margie) Nienaber

A Viewing of Wonder 24 October – 7 November 2020

The words may belong to Samuel Taylor Coleridge, but the sentiment is the artist’s own.

She goes on:

“Water seems to mirror the above
and beyond so well, spotted with little particles, dancing their own dance,
dressed in their own energy and reflected light.
And so, I revert to creating harmony in whichever way I can.”

It’s an apt description of her works, a whimsical blaze of “reflected light, “stitches” and pointillism” capturing the still, timeless serenity and wonder of the heavens.

Her works bear names like Stellar Swirl, Scales of Pisces, Ebb and Flow, Claritas and Northern Lights, emphasizing their celestial significance.

A Journey to the Stars

Born and bred in Windhoek, Margie attended St George’s Diocesan and Centaurus High School. After school she immersed herself in the formalities of teaching, majoring in Art at the Cape Teachers Training College in Mowbray, Cape Town.

Having earned her diploma, Margie returned to Windhoek to her alma maters where she taught English and History before ending up at St Paul’s College teaching Art until her retirement in 2010. She served as the Grade 10 to 12 External Art Examiner under the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture, and as school-based Assessor in Art and Design until 2019.

Upon retirement, Margie also enrolled in the Barbara Böhlke School of Art to finally focus on her own development as an artist. Here she discovered her ideal medium in oil pastel on Fabriano paper “in dark shades/tones”.

She describes her choice as, “a particular interest – a method of mark making, drawing, and painting”.

As a dedicated and enthusiastic member of the school, Margie has participated in various group exhibitions and her work has been shown at the Bank Windhoek Triennial exhibitions in 2014 and 2017.

Now, it’s time for the next phase of her creative journey with her first-ever – and long overdue – ‘solo showcase’.

After a lifetime of slogging away as a teacher, Margie is finally able to pursue her most passionate interests – exploring the wide field of two-dimensional art – in her own time and space.

Enjoy her first full-bodied collection, entitled, “Here, Above, Beyond” at:

The Project Room

From 24 October to 7 November

“What exciting and rejuvenating wonders there are,
‘Here, Above, Beyond,’ waiting for us to see, feel
and touch our souls in the unusual and worrying
times in which we exist.
And yet, the colours, radiance, and textures of art
materials encourage us to explore the space, light and
depth around us. Above us is the wide-open sky, dotted
at night with stars, pulsing, shining, trembling, moving
with light, welcoming us to a continuous viewing.”

We invite you to share in the endless wonder…

Viewing starts at 10am and a short speech by Urte Remmert, a Swakopmund – based artist and friend, takes place at approximately 12pm on the 24th of October 2020 at the Project Room in Windhoek. Please take note, a maximum of 50 people will be allowed indoors at once and the wearing of masks is mandatory (subject to fluctuating COVID regulations).

“I have no website and no Facebook platform…I only have an email address. At the grand old age of 68, I’m new to the game!”

Interested parties can contact the Project Room for a visual catalogue of her exhibition.
